It's self supporting!
The certifier was happy with how I had the pieces lined up and the stringlines I had put in place so it was all go for welding it together! I had started with one of the floor joints and regretted it as I kept burning holes - it was almost impossible to tell where the metal was Ok and where it had rusted from underneath (what used to be between the cross member and floor). So took some time and a bit of welding wire to fill some of the holes I had created. The roof welded up well and folding the roof of the middle section into the sunroof opening made it much easier as it only required one full weld across the roof and spot welds to the folded in roof section to the sunroof frame. It is now off the blocks and sitting only on blocks at the front and back. Feels really solid inside when you jump/walk around which is good as I am still to add some stiffness into the walls when I plug the two extra doors (will only have one sliding door directly behind the passenger seat). There is still plenty of welding to do - removing some bits of rust and plugging the doors etc and then it's on to the engine and suspension (which will be the next big milestone!) Not that many weekends left this year and with christmas quickly approaching the weekends I do have a re quickly filling up with other events so quite possibly not much progress until next year! Watch this space! :-)

Sorry, not sure who 'Electric' is?
ReplyDeleteDave; bathroom renovations are taking up precious weekend time hence no progress. I'm hoping to get back onto the van in a month or so! I keep checking your site and it looks like you've started making some progress again on your project. I shall keep checking on progress and hopefully in a month or two there should be an upated on my site too! :-)
Dave here, I made the "Electric" comment but don't know how it named me as such! It's been a year since the last update - what's happening? I am almost done with the body work and will be ready to start on the mechanicals soon.
ReplyDeleteHey Dave, Yes it's been some time since I've worked on it. We've done some renovations to house which have taken up all of last year basically and are still not quite finished yet. Also building a carport at present for the wifes car which will mean that I can get some work done in garage on the van at night without her car getting in the way. Hoping for more progress this year than I managed last year! :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Daniel
ReplyDeleteHope all is well with you and yours. I managed to get the engine fired up last month and am working on the linkages now. Time for some progress on your side too methinks...

:)
Hi Daniel
ReplyDeleteHope all is well and progress is on the cards.
I am making slow but steady progress on the Marigold stretch project. My new website address is at http://themarigoldproject.blogspot.com/, please check in occasionally for updates.

Hey sorry for lack of updates and not replying earlier; I don't think the webpage tells me when someone puts on a comment. I've just browsed your page and like you we've also bought a new house (built a new house actually) and hence there has been no progress. I have promised myself to get onto the van this year though now that house and landscaping is largely complete. so hopefully there will be an update some time over the next few months. Well done on getting yours back together and 'on the road' - that's a huge milestone!
